Safe Babies & CPS Room Volunteer Opportunity
When we think of a “CPS case” there are a few common things that usually come to mind. Most of us are aware that there are many participants including children, parents, attorneys, judges, sometimes foster homes. However, there are some important details that are not often talked or thought about – one of them being the Parent-Child visits.
These visits, albeit imperative for the parent-child relationship, often take place at the DFPS Visitation Rooms. These rooms are often the middle ground for all parties on a case but are still an unfamiliar and unnatural environment for a child. Additionally, since many families use these rooms, it is common for toys to become worn out, broken, or missing. In 2019, we created a partnership to sponsor 2 rooms at our Dallas CPS office to make each infant/toddler focused. Safe Babies works to ensure that there are developmentally appropriate toys, a bright and welcoming atmosphere, and a clean space available for the families. This is to ensure that parents and children are able to work on building their attachment and relationship, all while also working on developmental milestones through play.
In 2021, at the request of DFPS we created a monthly volunteer opportunity to clean, sanitize and restock items in the rooms. These are the typical activities during the monthly clean:
- Clean, sanitize, and wipe walls
- Clean, sanitize, wipe tables, chairs, and other surfaces
- Disinfect toys
- Clean the windows
- Remove broken or hazardous items
- Organize or alternate toys as available
If you would like to volunteer but are unable to do so in person – we would also appreciate donations. Items that are in constant need for the rooms include:
- New or gently used toys
- New or gently used books
- Sanitizing Wipes
- Paper Towels
- Magic Erasers (scrubbing tools)
- Floor Cleaning Solution (Pinesol, Swiffer Solution, etc.)
- Surface Cleaner (Goo gone, “the pink stuff” etc.)
We’re thankful for any and all help!
