Funder Highlight: The Miles Foundation

“We are proud to support First3Years in its work to ensure children gain the healthy start they need to learn, grow, and thrive. It is a privilege to partner with First3Years in pursuing our shared mission of building strong beginnings and a brighter future for Fort Worth.”

Grant Coates, President & CEO
  The Miles Foundation

The Miles Foundation envisions a future in which children are given the foundation they need to lead a healthy, hopeful, and productive life. It was founded to serve as a legacy for the life, work and values of Mr. Ellison Miles, a philanthropist, WWII veteran, and oil and gas pioneer born in Liberty, Texas.

The Miles Foundation recently awarded a grant of $21,000 to support the work of Raising of Fort Worth – a collaboration to generate engagement and action for creating quality investments in early childhood development and education opportunities for our youngest in Fort Worth. First3Years serves as lead partner for the collaborative. We sat down with Sara Redington, Director of Communications for The Miles Foundation to learn how this support furthers the Foundation’s mission and vision.

How has investing in Raising of Fort Worth and First3Years helped further the mission of The Miles Foundation? What are your motivations?

Our founder, Ellison Miles, was a strong supporter of education throughout his life. Today, The Miles Foundation carries on his legacy by investing in local education programs that promote the next generation’s success. The work of First3Years through Raising of Fort Worth aligns with our mission to provide children the strong start they need to succeed in learning and in life.

What are you most proud of, that we’ve achieved together?

The Raising of Fort Worth collaboration has been an effective lever in broadening awareness and engagement in local early childhood education. Sadie Funk’s leadership has been invaluable in convening a diverse group of stakeholders who, together, can move the needle to ensure quality early childhood experiences for all children in Fort Worth.

How would you describe working with First3Years/ What drives you to partner with First3Years?

The First3Years team always brings an innovative mindset to this work – studying best practices, seeking fresh approaches to engaging new audiences, and measuring our effectiveness along the way. First3Years’ collaborative approach aligns with our Foundation’s philosophy in our giving and our partnerships.

Is there anything else you would like to share about The Miles Foundation and your support of early childhood development in North Texas?

The Miles Foundation’s work is an ongoing journey toward effecting positive change and creating a lasting impact together with our community partners. We look forward to continuing to learn and grow with First3Years in this important early childhood work.

Research has proven the astounding economic return on investment in quality early childhood education: By promoting lifelong learning and success, and reducing negative outcomes and later remediation efforts, society gains up to $16 for every dollar invested in quality early childhood programs.

In this video, The Miles Foundation features key early childhood statistics, as well as perspectives from Mayor Betsy Price and other Fort Worth leaders in the civic, academic, health, education, business, and philanthropic communities who believe that supporting quality early childhood development for every child means a brighter future for Fort Worth.”
